Welcome to the Real World (Susan Van Vleet)

I thought this article was quite truthful and valuable after having spent 10 years in the "real world". There's only one more thing I would add: try to remain who you are even as you climb the corporate ladder. If you feel like you must sacrifice who you are in order to get ahead, is it worth it then? In some companies it seems like you have to fit some kind of mold in order to be successful, and that you have to become really good at the politics to get ahead. If you're OK with that go ahead knock yourself out, but if it makes you uncomfortable, DON'T DO IT. It's almost the equivalent of teen peer pressure but in the "real world". Don't fall into the trap.

Getting Ready for The Real World

For over 28 years I have worked with very successful women in corporations worldwide like P&G, IBM, J&J, HP and Dell. They often say to me, “If I only knew at 15 what I know now I could have saved myself a lot of trouble.”

Now I have the wonderful opportunity to tell you what these great women wish they had known at your age:

1) Expect to make mistakes at work and expect to be corrected for making them.
Don’t worry about making mistakes accept that you will make mistakes and build in an ability to hear bad things about yourself that a boss or co-workers will say. Practice apologizing and be ready for any and all correction. When people correct you they are doing you a wonderful service. They are telling you how they see you. This is invaluable feedback for you to have. So be ready to not always be right!

2) Not everything will go your way all the time.
Lower your acceptance lines for your company not taking your suggestions or conditions and not implementing them. In fact, if you have a 25-50% batting average (that is 25-50% of the time your boss/company takes your suggestions and implements them) you are doing well. Develop an acceptance for someone else’s way of doing things now because once you get out in the work world you better be able to do your job the way other’s (boss, company, etc.) have defined it. If you practice giving up some control now over how things will be done it will be easier for you later. Most work these days is organized around projects that are run by multi disciplinary teams. Some of the women I work with are on two to three teams and must use “Influencing Skills” more the any other skill set. These skills include; listening, confronting, clarifying and brain storming. If you learn these skills now you will be ahead of the game.

3) Temper your loyalty to your company with loyalty to yourself and your family.
Work hard to establish yourself when you are in your first job but don’t forget your friends, family and hobbies. In other words, balance your life. Make sure you spend time with and on your friends, family and hobbies. Don’t work all the time. Make sure you have downtime. Make sure you take care of yourself spiritually, emotionally and physically and make sure you are a whole person, multi-faceted not just defined as your job.

4) Finally, the women I work with recommend you prepare yourself now for your first full time job.
The best way I know for you to do this is to take a part time job or internship while you are in high school. If you can do this only in the summer, that’s fine, but do try out your wings now.

Most of all, I and the women I work with are excited for you because you have so much to look forward to in your life. All of the growth you go through in the next few years will help prepare you for a wonderful, exciting future.

I warn you it goes quickly, so make sure you enjoy yourself and celebrate yourself as you go.

My Cubicle

Climbing the Corporate Ladder

Everyone knows I've been having my Office Space moments more and more often lately, mostly due to my job disappearing and my new job not starting until about a month from now. Among other things, I have decided that not only will I catch up on my reading, but I will also use the internet to talk with old friends and exponentially grow my number of blogs and time spent on Facebook. But most importantly I decided I was going to take advantage of my $22 a month gym membership here at work to get in shape over the next month. Especially since I'll hopefully be pregnant soon and therefore need to desperately stay away from gaining 46 lbs. like last time!

So yesterday I did a crazy elliptical workout with my workout buddy and today we did yoga. I usually try to workout at the end of the day so that I can go home afterwards and not have to shower or change here at work. But after yoga today (which was during lunchtime) I decided you know what, I'm not going to change back into my work clothes, I'm going to sit back in my cubicle dressed in my yoga clothes. That's what I call climbing the corporate ladder! As I walked back to my cubicle and passed by people wearing suits I could feel them staring me down. You have to imagine me with a sweatshirt, sweatpants, and flip flops. But I feel more comfortable and I've been twice as productive this afternoon as I've been the entire first half of the week (this last statement was made in case anyone from work is reading this). I think I'm taking my cues from Mara who's now a college student again. My next step is to kick down the cubicle walls...

Pest Control Request From

Today when I got into the office someone from HR comes up to me and my colleague and asks me if we were the ones complaining about a "bug" yesterday. We said yes. They asked us had we reported the incident? We said we didn't know we were supposed to do that or could do that, in fact we don't even know how to do that. She told us we could go onto our internal web site and find the form. Lo and behold after searching for a few minutes I did find the "Pest Control Request Form" and submitted that. Let's see what happens next.

I'm reminded of the time we were out at one of the other sites and went to the infirmary to ask for band-aids because we had uncomfortable shoes at the time. They told us we couldn't get band-aids without filling out incident reports. So I said, "what am I supposed to report? That I wore the wrong shoes today?!"

Substandard Working Conditions

Last month we showed up at work and got an email from a high up person in management talking about exciting new changes that were happing to our floor's bathrooms (both ladies' and men's). You want to know what those exciting changes have meant? Having to premeditate every bathroom break around lunch or snack breaks so that we can use the bathroom on another floor.

A week later the city started getting warmer and warmer, which resulted in smog alerts. Which resulted in half of the lighting in our floor being turned off. So I kiddingly said, first they take away our bathrooms now they take away the light!

This is the straw that broke the camel's back...it seems that the construction in the bathroom has started spreading cockroaches. My colleague and I saw a roach around our cubicle after coming back from lunch today and started screaming. An hour or so later we heard screaming in our vicinity, so I assume Mr. Roachy has moved on to greener pastures. I still can't put my feet on the floor though.

To compensate, we were rewarded with cookies today from a local bakery. :)
